At the end of the Kommos, according to the composer’s handwritten note, there is the following dedication: "Kommos for the death of Patrice Lumumba" (he was assassinated on January 17th, 1961, while he was the first democratically elected prime minister of the Republic of Congo and a leading figure in the struggle against colonialism in Africa).
